At certain times of year most of us take a break from our daily routines and go somewhere else. This usually involves travel or a journey of some sort and whether you fly, drive, cycle, run or walk, keeping yourself hydrated along the way will help you feel much fresher upon arrival.

Everywhere around us, wherever we go it seems, we're presented with hundreds of 'options' in the 'refreshing' end of the drinks market, most of them carbonated and brightly packaged, highly sweetened and definitely not a healthy option.

Diabetes type 2, which is linked with a diet consistently too high in sugar (which causes overload on the body leaving it is unable to process sugars and starches properly and turn them into energy), is on the increase and our soda habits aren't helping. Apart from the daily regime of insulin injections, people with diabetes are up to five times more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. So let's not go there.

The simplest alternative is, of course, simply to drink water.

Yes, we know it's good for us, especially when travelling and especially in the heat of late summer. Hydration is just super important!! Especially when you want to keep your body fat content down - did you know that you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water! (Do the math!!)

Yes, our bodies will certainly thank us for drinking plenty of it. But if you're not yet accustomed to the taste, or lack of it, of pure water, you might like these 'recipe' suggestions to help you get into the good habit of drinking it - to get into your flow.

When you're out and about, keep water handy all the time and flavor it to keep you motivated to drink up!

Take a tall glass (or bottle), fill with your favorite choice of still or sparkling water, then...

Add a slice of...

Choose one of these and add slices into your glass;

  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Orange
  • Cucumber
  • Ginger root


Select your favorite flavor and add a fresh sprig of;

  • Mint leaves
  • Basil leaves
  • Grated ginger
  • Lavender flowers
  • Rosemary
  • Sorrel

Tip - remember to make these drinks ahead of time! Just pre-cut your favorite juicy fruits & herbals and have them ready to go to sprinkle in your water!

Fruity Fresheners

Slice or dice, shake or stir - choose one flavor or a few together:

  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Watermelon
  • Pineapple
  • Oranges
  • Cherries
  • Peaches

Summery Water Cocktails

Take a highball glass, fill it with sparkling water, then experiment!

  • Pimms = stir in slices of cucumber, strawberries, oranges, several mint leaves & ice
  • Gin-less Fizz = add freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice and wafer-thin slices of cucumber then stir
